Overachieving

Reading through this Ask MetaFilter thread about the rote memorization of pi, I'm reminded of being back in the third grade or so when everyone was given a choice of three poems to memorize. Of course everyone in the class chose the shortest one, which was probably four lines long. Being something of an overachiever at the time, I picked the one with three long, epic stanzas.

Later that week we had to recite our poems, which is the sort of thing I loathed doing. The entire rest of the class got up in groups of four and blurted out that same, short poem, over and over. It was horrifically boring after the second time, let alone the third or fourth. When I was the only one who stood up to recite the long poem, the teacher asked if anyone else had chosen that one. At that point I think some girl who had been absent when we first chose the poems said that she'd be willing the memorize the long one as well. So I wouldn't have to read the poem alone, the teacher decided to postpone the recital to another day.

Well, guess what? It never happened. I never had to read that poem.

I don't know what the moral of that story is.

Nintendo GameCube 2001 - 2007

Nintendo GameCube 2001 - 2007

Perrin Kaplan has confirmed that Nintendo has ceased manufacturing everyone's favorite, not-quite-cubic console. Its big releases may have been few and far between, but boy did it have some quality titles.

A brief look back at some of the best exclusives (which you may have heard of before):

F-ZERO GX - Totally impossible, hyper-maxifun racing from the future! Excite Truck may have a better sense of speed, but this game will always be the fastest racer. If that makes sense.

Metroid Prime - Metroid in 3D, as a first-person shooter was a recipe for disaster. But Retro Studios not only didn't ruin the franchise, they somehow made it awesome. I couldn't have asked for a better game to pick up alongside my Cube.

Super Smash Bros. Melee - ...Except for this one! Morgan and I spent hours and hours of our sophomore year battling it out ADD-style.

Pikmin 2 - Loads of content, puzzles, action, strategy, and just a really fun overall tone.

Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Cartoon Link 4 LIFE.

Resident Evil 4 - OK, not an exclusive, but if only Capcom had somehow gotten this out a few years earlier instead of all those remakes and rereleases (and had actually kept this exclusive), the Cube's life might have been very different.

Rest in peace.

5 Games in 2006

Last year I held off on doing my games list until February because I was still playing Shadow of the Colossus (which ended up being #1). This year, it's been delayed because of sheer procrastination!

At one point I had typed out some rant about how barely anyone in the industry really understands what innovation really means (especially not Peter Moore), ending it with a request that developers just focus on making a product that's actually fun. That's based on the fact that all of the titles on the list this year (save for one) don't really push the envelope in terms of amazing new gameplay ideas; they're just plain fun to play.

The first four are in alphabetical order:

Excite Truck - Previous thoughts. I expect this will be my favorite Wii game for a while.

God Hand - For the longest time I had this craving for a simple, 3D action game where you just push buttons and beat people up and have it be inexplicably fun. It turned out that game was God Hand.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - Still not done with this, but I'm enjoying it far more than I was earlier. The game really picked up once I got the Master Sword. I still miss Wind Waker's graphics and overall presentation, though.

Tetris DS - As I mentioned in my earlier thoughts, I'll still take the original 1989 Gameboy Tetris for single player, but boy did I spend a lot of time playing the online VS mode in this one. Now if they'd just release a patch so I could listen to something besides that horrible Mario Bros. remix.

The last game I'm singling out as #1, because I have a horrible crush on Yasumi Matsuno and Hitoshi Sakimoto. (And Akihiko Yoshida, I'll never forget about you!)

#1 - Final Fantasy XII - I put over 95 hours into this already and fully intend on going back later for as long as it takes to fill the Sky Pirate's Den.

...And now, some other notables:

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin - Another superb 2D Castlevania, maybe even better than 2001's Circle of the Moon. It's got some really inspired level designs, and the best soundtrack since Symphony of the Night. I could get used to a yearly Castlevania sequel.

New Super Mario Bros. - Really fun, but also really short and really easy. Actually, it wouldn't even seem that short if it wasn't laughably easy. I hope they're not afraid to make NSMB2 totally impossible. Like, Super Mario Bros. World 8 impossible!

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence - A great update to my #1 game of 2004, with a new camera that makes me wonder how I ever played the original. It's too bad the online wasn't better.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3 - Great, technical gameplay, but playing the super-robotic AI is only fun for so long. Single-cart local wi-fi or online multiplayer would have helped this a lot.

...And some notables from previous years:

Animal Crossing: Wild World - Yeah I spent an obscene amount of time playing this.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Proving that the text adventure genre is only 99% dead.

Pikmin 2 - One of my favorite GameCube games. Without that godawful time limit from the first one, this is actually sort of relaxing to play.

...And another:

God of War - Oh god is this the most overrated game ever? The over-the-top violence was fun for like a half hour, but then after that it just turns into an Onimusha knock-off with stupid-monotonous combat. Hey, every-PS2-owner-and-gaming-journalist: It is entirely possible for a terrible game to somehow have miraculous production values.

See you next February!

Year of the headache

I can't think of a better time than a long weekend to become incredibly sick. And on Chinese New Year, too. So I guess if this is any indication, I'll probably slowly wither away and die over the next 12 months. Gong xi fa cai.

At least I'll go out playing back-to-back Picross and classic Gradius games.

PICROSS IS HERE

Just because I don't have enough unplayed DS games piling up, my Play-Asia box arrived today and among the contents was Picross DS:

Being a recovering Super Picross addict, I pretty much ordered this right when it was announced. That is, before they even had the box art on the site. So, imagine my surprise to notice this familiar icon, gratuitously magnified here:

YES, PICROSS DS WITH INTERNET MULTIPLAYER. I have no idea what this actually means because I can't read a single word in the manual. I'm hoping it might be a sharing option for a hypothetical create-your-own puzzle mode, but I have yet to start it up. If it turns out to be some kind of timed competition, I hope Japan will go easy on me.

2D lives! (so does this site)

: |

Sometime last year I talked about how 3D game graphics are slowly approaching the artistic quality of hand-drawn, 2D graphics, thanks to HD cel shading and some creative art direction. I just wanted to point out the Final Fantasy Tactics remake for PSP as another great example of this trend, and it's not even HD. The characters in the shot above are actually fully 3D with some amazing shader applied. Stills don't do it justice, so if you're interested you can watch the trailer at the game's horrific Flash site.

Another notable 2D revival game is the Final Fantasy Anniversary Edition, which I believe is the fourth time FF1 and 2 have been remade. Seeing those familiar sprites in crisp, high resolution is great, but they also give me kind of a cheap Windows RPG vibe. Hopefully it's just because of the terrible compression in the screenshots.

Finally, there's Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, which has 3D graphics but 2D gameplay like New Super Mario Bros., and it looks amazing. I mean, look at this new Richter design. It's good to see Ayami Kojima making a comeback.

The only thing that could improve on this trend is if developers would start putting together some new titles instead of all these remakes.
