So the other day I mentioned that the difficulty in Salamander is "nowhere near as brutal as the early Gradius games." I retract this statement times infinity.

Yeah, I completely understand myself. I have Salamander Portable on PSP and the collection is definitely very tough. It's great shooter fun though.
