An intruder has penetrated our force field!

helo

I picked up Salamander Portable during Play Asia's summer sale and just got around to trying it tonight. Out of the included Salamander, Life Force, Salamander 2, Xexex and Gradius 2 (most of which I've never played), so far I've only tried the original Salamander. But so far it's been great, mostly because it's like bizarro-Gradius. It's got all the same weapons and equipment, but instead of a powerup meter you just pick them up directly, like most other arcade shooters. And speaking of that, after the first level, Vic Viper rotates around and the game goes into vertical mode. WHAT.

Also really interesting is realizing how much Gradius V borrowed from this game. There are a ton of elements from Gradius V's cell stage that come directly from Salamander's first stage. (On a lesser note, the options are called multiples here as well.) I'm looking forward to getting through more of the game to see if anything else is familiar. It may take a while because the difficulty is pretty high up there (although nowhere near as brutal as the early Gradius games), but I'll be enjoying it.

Hooray, shooters!

EHEHEHE

EHEHE guess what I just bought I've had for a little over a week now. (Hint.) Following the price drop last weekend, the free blu-ray (Is that capitalized?) offer, and the news that the next batches of consoles will have spotty PS1/2 software emulation, I decided it was the time to buy.

Also, within 48 hours of arriving home with the giant black box, R.J. and MC (we all go by initials) both picked one up for themselves. This prompted daily reactions from me along the lines of, "Dude, I can't believe you bought a PS3." But then I'd remember, I have one too. I've barely taken the console seriously since the legendary Sony press conference last year, yet here it is, sitting in my living room.

So far I'm enjoying it. Been playing a lot of Ridge Racer 7, a bunch of demos, and today I downloaded Super Stardust HD, which is excellent. Unfortunately, the three of us each got a different game with the system, so there hasn't been any real online play to speak of yet. Might order Motorstorm online soon because I can't get over the $59.99 MSRP. In the meantime, if you want to play some RR7 or compare Stardust scores, feel free to add me.

24 hours later

OK, so I ended up sitting on Circuit City's order confirmation page for some time before finally closing the window. But in my defense, I was going to do the bundle with the system and free extra controller, and all the stores on this side of the bay only had one or the other available for in-store pickup. And look which stores they were!

I'm definitely ordering once some new inventory comes in. And if I end up going to two stores, preferably they'll be in the same direction from my house.

It's bizarro E3 week!

That means maybe I'll have some stuff to write about. I've really been meaning to post some things for a while, but just when I'm feeling productive, THINGS happen. And, I won't lie: the things are usually either Battlefield 2142 or DJMAX Portable.

For now, I've at least dumped my backlog of links all over the sidebar there. Enjoy.

Also, I'm probably buying a PS3 sometime in the next 24 hours. Feel free to try to talk me out of it.
